Landscape with ruins and an obelisk

Abraham van Westerveld (ca. 1620-1692)

1650

The collection of Maciej Radziwiłł

Abraham van Westerveld was court painter to Hetman Janusz Radziwiłł between 1650 and 1653. He is the author of landscapes from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, in particular the eastern parts of the Kingdom of Poland (Kyiv) and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. He accompanied Polish troops during the recapture of Kyiv in 1651, at which time he created numerous drawings of the city and its surroundings.

The landscape on display likely adorned Janusz Radziwiłł's Palace in Vilnius.
